Greekster's 10th Anniversary

Guess what's coming back. Yep, Greekster's annual summer stroll show in NYC. What will be different? Well it is the 10 year anniversary; so I'm sure there are bound to be surprises...right? See you in June 2011 :)

Google loves the Latinos

I think America is starting to realize the power of the Latino. Google has just released a series of short videos dubbed “Google Hispanic Marketing Forum” touting the growth and strength of Hispanics online. This is not really a surprise since Google just hired Mark Lopez, former COO of Terra Networks, to lead their Hispanic market efforts, a first for the search giant.

According to MediaPost, "U.S. Hispanics are 58% more likely to click on search ads, compared with the general population...six out of 10 made a purchase in a store as a result of seeing online advertisements while researching products -- 22% more than the general population." Not sure about the statistics? Check out one of Google's videos stating what I like to call fun facts about Hispanics online. Enjoy!

The awesome side of Greek life - OPB Step/Stroll

You ever meet an organization which takes stepping and strolling to the next level? Well if you don't, meet Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Founded in 1989, their stepping team was then formed in 1990. Since then they have won countless competitions/awards, performed at various Greek-related events and also promoted the "art of stepping" to the non-Greek community.

And now on to REMO who has created the community which promotes stepping to our youth. She's traveled all over the country teaching not only other Greeks but to everyone. She holds stepping workshops and teaches the importance of unity. Because Greek life is about UNITY after all right? I've worked with REMO on a couple of projects and let me tell you she means business; but she's also a fun person to work with. Intelligent. Fun. Excited. What more can you ask for? REMO, you are truly the awesome side of Greek life.

Here's a look at OPB's upcoming performances via their Bringing it Back Tour:

  • Past performance: January 22nd - Artistic Confessions(A Remo Production) Nuyorican Poets Café, NY. Region 1: (Eastern NY)
  • February 18th - Charleston Southern University Charleston, South Carolina
  • March 5th - Triple S Baruch College, NY. Region 2: (Mid-Atlantic)
  • April 20th - Artistic Confessions(A Remo Production) Johnson & Wales University, RI. Region 4: (New England) Sponsored by Alpha Epsilon Chapter

A selfless man

Because every now and then we need to remind ourselves that life is not easy. However, as long as there's someone by our side, we know we can make it through this crazy thing call la vida.

New LATISM logo and website

Latism has finally launched their brand new (BETA) website. The website will become the only online hub for the wildly popular LATISM hashtag on Twitter and Facebook community. Latism (Latinos in Social Media) is the largest organized group of Latino Twitteros, Facebookers, bloggers, PR professionals and so on. On the new website you'll be able to:
  • List yourself and your business by using the site's new interactive directory
  • Report on what's happening in your world right now by connecting your blog to your LATISM account and sharing them via social media platforms
  • Find and be found by organizations and corporations interested in reaching out to Latinos
  • Discover, connect with, and support other Latinos who share their interest by joining LATISM groups
  • And more!
And how about their fancy new logo? I remembered a few months ago they sent out a survey with options. I think the new logo was my first or second choice. Either way, 2011 is bound to be great for Latism. Cheers. Looking forward to connecting with mi gente.

Hispanicize gets more interesting

Today the Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA), Hispanicize and the Hispanic PR blog unveiled the roster of Latino social media industry thought leaders, bloggers and sessions that will be featured at Hispanicize 2011. Speakers also include a number of PR professionals, marketers, Television industry leaders and a whole bunch of social media gurus.

To learn more about the sessions and the awesome speakers, visit Hispanicizeconference.com. My personal favorite is "Speed Dating: Latina and Latino Bloggers Meet the Brands and Agencies." I can only imagine the tweets from this session haha. I wonder if I can make the conference.

P.S. The conference will take place in Los Angeles, CA, April 6 - 8. See you there?

Video: Philly Te Ama and Guillermo Tellez

I'm a fan of mi cultura and recognizing those people doing their thing. That's why at work I came up with the idea to highlight ten (10) Philadlephia Latinos and ask them, "Why is Philadelphia a great place for you and other Latinos?" Today uwishunu launched the series starting with Square 1682's executive chef Guillermo Tellez.

I've eaten at his restaurant a few times and I must say it is delicious. Here what he has to say about Philadelphia as a dining destination and the local food scene. Enjoy! Stay hungry :).

Colombians galore in Philly

Sure Philadelphia is mostly full of Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Dominicans and so on, but there are a good number of other Latino cultures in Philly. And now with the addition of two astounding Colombians in the Philadelphia Union, we're bound to show Philly what we're about. (By we I mean Colombianos). A few weeks ago the Philadelphia Union added Colombian internationals Faryd Mondragon and Carlos Valdes.

A Philly.com writer recently interviewed Univision 65's Julio Largo about the impact this will have on the city. Largo said:
  • For the Colombian community, first of all, it’s an exciting moment. We now have four players on the Philadelphia Union. For us, it shows to the rest of Philadelphia that we are different, that we are a different community. We have excellent people visiting Philadelphia, working in Philadelphia. That is great.

For the Philadelphia Union, it’s a great moment to have the economic part growing, and the players that they have right now are really exciting.
Hopefully the Union will have a better season this year. Let's cheer them and Philly sports for a great year!

Video: Daniel Hernandez has flashbacks

Imagine saving someone's life then making 100+ TV appearances nationwide. Pressure? I'm glad Daniel Hernandez is giving a great example of what it really means to be a "regular" person doing what he needs to do to survive.

In the video below Hernandez says he re-accounts the horrible evening. What's the best part? he is very humble and handles this situation at a calm pace. Cheers to you (again).

Motivation for mi gente

There comes a time when I have to reflect at the past few months. There has been a lot on my mind because of the recent deaths in my circle of friends and family and the "scare" my mom went through a few weeks ago. It seems as though everything usually comes crashing down at once but thankfully I have found strength to keep on moving. Work, friends, family, other and so on keeps me busy enough to not stress.
Regardless of what has happened in the last few months, positive things have came into mi vida. In November 2010, I was named one of the "Delaware Valley's Most Influential Latinos," an even produced by the Philadelphia Multicultural Affairs Congress and Impacto Latin Newspaper, and in 2011, I took home the Professional of the Year Award, one of three Excelencia Hispanic Business Awards distributed annually by the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. All two accomplishments by the age of 26. Is that possible? Sure it is. But it's not easy. There are many things I want to get out of my chest but we'll leave those for happy hours!
During both award ceremonies I received a good number of thanks and greetings from people I know in Philly who stated my work is much appreciated. Why do I do it? I do it for many reasons, but I mostly do it for mi familia. I've come to the realization I wouldn't know what I would do without them. Motivation doesn't come by often, but when you have a good group of people around you, it definitely comes in handy. That's why 2011 is for them and for mi Tia Gloria and Ramon Baez.

Colombia wins big

FoxNewsLatino reported that last Saturday the Colombian hip-shaker also known as Shakira took the stage and also won at this year's NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, France. Shakira not only won the International Female Artist of the Year Award, but also International Song of the Year for her single “Waka Waka" (This Time for Africa.)

Looks like two Colombians won big this past weekend ;).

The awesome side of Greek life - Sister of CUS

I know a lot of people who dismiss the idea of Greek life nowadays, and they are in fact Greek themselves. Although I do strongly believe in "to each his/her own" it's weird to see the reaction I get when you bring up Greek-lettered organizations to older brothers and sisters. However, once in a while you get that one person who just doesn't stop and proves time and time again that their organization is doing things, and so is the person. This week we highlight Chi Upsilon Sigma's @Lauren2Syna.

I've known Lauren for almost seven years now and she is as passionate now as she was in Spring 2004. She has served under many different roles as an undergraduate and graduate sister. Even today she hosts events for her graduate chapter in New York City. She is passionate to her organization and speaks highly of it...sort of makes you want to pledge CUS lol. Lauren is not afraid to speak (or tweet) her mind and keep it real SP04 style. I'm glad to have met her and see she is still as "vibrant" as ever. Lauren...you are the awesome side of Greek life.

The urge to salsarenguechata

Yep you heard that right. It's been a while since I've gone out bailando but looks like tomorrow is going to be a good night. The venue of choice? Cuba Libre in Olde City. On Friday and Saturday, after dinner hours, the dinner floor turns into the dance floor with Latino rhythms as professional salsa dancers perform colorful floorshows in the main room. Sure drinks are a "little" expensive, but it is one of the most popular spots to dance salsa/merengue/bachata in the city. I do have to say the Cuba Libre in Atlantic City is a little more festive and enjoyable. Has anyone been to the new location in Washington, DC? Either way, forget all your troubles and enjoy life. See you all tomorrow! :)

We will not forget (Dream Act)

Talk about making a statement. The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), yesterday, launched an online and print ad campaign called WE WILL NOT FORGET. The NCLR wants you to see the ad and have a chance to participate. The ads will be running in Spanish-language newspapers in select states in addition to an online ad campaign in both English and Spanish. The ads feature how members of Congress in both the Senate and the House voted on the "Dream Act." Photos of the senators are also included. Bold move.

This is a wonderful way to see which politicians were for and against the Dream Act. The full version of the poster above has the entire list of politicians and unfortunately to say, it's divided almost equally. If we have a country divided on certain issues, then what makes us think there will be progress? Us normal folk will just have to continue what we do and be ambassadors. Showcase there is hope for Latinos in America; it's all we can do.

Internship program informational

On Thursday, February 3rd at 7 p.m., Gamma Phi Sigma and Chi Iota Pi will be hosting the HACU National Internship Program Informational (HNIP) at the University of Maryland - College Park. Since 1992 the HNIP has recruited college students for paid summer-and semester-long internships at federal agencies and private corporations throughout the country. These ten and fifteen-week internship programs give college students direct experience in a diverse array of careers in the federal and corporate sectors.

And talk about a wonderful opportunity waiting to happen. Most colleges make it mandatory for you to take internships and some don't. Students sometimes don't know of these opportunity or just don't have time to find internships. I was lucky enough to find internships through my school and actually made it part of my schedule; I treated it as if it was another class. Hopefully students in the Washington, DC area can take advantage of the HACU informational.

Arts & culture in Philadelphia

Earlier today I was able to listen to Philadelphia's art & culture leaders talk about...well just that, "the cultural life of Philadelphia". It was an interesting group of leaders including the National Constitution Center, Taller Puertorriqueño, the African-American Museum in Philadelphia and more. The main goal of the PPRA hosted event was to find out what we can do to make the city an arts & culture destination; a unified place for arts & culture.

So is Philly an arts & culture destination? It sure is! According to a Philadelphia Cultural Alliance (PCA) report, officially unveiled by Mayor Nutter last December, from 2006 to 2008 Philadelphia’s creative sector performance increased by 7% and measured at 1.7, which is 70% stronger than the national baseline score of 1.0. In fact, Philadelphia’s CVI growth rate is in the top 5 in the entire country. Another PCA report states, "African-Americans and Hispanics report the highest level of cultural activity, a compelling finding as virtually all population growth through 2020 in the region will come from non-white residents."

So what's wrong? The consensus was that Philadelphia and its citizens need to grab a unified message and spread it to our network. Ambassadors are a city's best friend. When you can get a city as excited about arts & culture the way they are about sports, then you have got yourself a grateful city. On a similar note, let's hope the upcoming PIFA festival can bring this city together.

A Latino Superbowl weekend

What are you doing the first weekend of February? Most likely the Superbowl right? If you're lucky enough to be in Dallas February 6, you'll be celebrating like crazy no matter what team wins. However, if you're there the entire weekend, why not spend it at the SUPER LATINO COMEDY BOWL! A little extra? I don't think so, in fact it's probably perfect timing.

Comedy acts include:

Tickets are as low as $50 and as high as $100 so again, you get what you pay for. Get your tickets now!

So why do we do it...

Sometimes I have to ask myself, why do we do it? Why do Latinos work "extra" hard to achieve success and become what our parents wanted us to be and more so for ourselves. There's a lot of attention on Arizona and Daniel Hernadez because he "saved" the congresswoman's life. I'm sure he didn't do it for the fame, I mean he's only 20 years-old. Then FoxNewsLatino publishes a story about Latinos and heroic deeds. So what is it?

I believe it's a cultural thing. We are influenced by so much that we just HAVE to make it in life. Music, food, clothing, technology all play an important role in our lives. However, most people, and by most I mean the mainstream work, don't understand how culture influences our lives. And I'm no diversity coach, but come on, sometimes it's so simple yet people are so clueless to what is going on. Yes I'm being very vague, but I have to. And yes I'm venting a little here so bare with me :).

And why do I do it? I do it because of our familia. I know I do. All this success is for them, not for me. I could have all the money in the world but for what? I'd spend it on mom and dad, a nice house and paying off all those student loans. Currently making "enough" to live is okay, but sometimes I wonder what if I made a little more. I mean at 26 years-old, I need to start thinking about the future.

Our new favorite Latino

Fun fact: Did you know Bruno Mars is half Puerto Rican (father's side). And now you know. Enjoy :)

Surprise...they do speak Spanish. Duh.

People always have an issue with Latino actors in America who some say don't claim their Latino(ness). However, Latina Magazine found 8 of the clips which show those Latinos hablando español. Sure some of the videos aren't the best, but hey at least they're trying right?

My personal favorite is below: Michelle Rodriguez. Not only is she speaking perfectly, but she also goes deep reflecting on la pelicula: Machete.

The awesome side of Greek life - Being a neo

Remember last week's awesome side of greek life post? Well we must continue! So what else is awesome about this wonderful world of Greek life, how about being a NEO? You know the feeling when you can FINALLY be social, go out, represent your org, wear your new favorite color and so on. The best part is all the recognition you get. Sure it sounds a little narcissistic but it's great finally getting attention after 8-12 weeks of "education".

I remember crossing SP04 and the first day back at Temple feeling alive. People say things like, "OMG I didn't know you were pledging" and "Congratulations". You then learn to stroll (and step) and learn all those cool things you say during probates. So good luck to SP11 <---doesn't that sound weird. And by SP11 I mean SP2011, I'm sure SP11 is already taken.

p.s. What was your NEO experience like?

Inspirational Latina: Michelle Angela Ortiz

You ever meet one of those people whom are the true definition of a powerful Latino(a) in the U.S.? Well if you're in Philly, Mexico, Puerto Rico or even Colombia, I'm sure you've heard of Michelle Angela Ortiz. I've had the pleasure of knowing Michelle for a few years now but for the past year I've worked with her in helping put a face to the successful PHILADELPHIA Latino(a).

Muralist, art educator, Latina: As a highly skilled muralist, Ortiz has designed and created over 30 large scale public works nationally and internationally (Fiji, Mexico, Ecuador & Costa Rica) and is a recipient of the Leeway Foundation Art & Change Grant (2006) and Transformation Award (2008.) In July 2010 I brought in a writer from Latina Magazine to Philadelphia and she was able to connect with Michelle. Fast forward to today, you get the full page spread on Michelle in Latina Magazine (February 2010 - above). Congrats!

p.s. Be on the lookout for a special entrevista with Michelle in the next few weeks :).

Daniel Hernandez...you are awesome

Why is Daniel Hernandez awesome? Because he did what EVERY human being do; that's save a life. Yes he is Latino, but first and foremost he is an American...someone who wanted to become successful in this crazy world (and out of all places Arizona). Would you have done the same thing? Watch señor Hernandez in the video below explain why he doesn't think he is a "hero".

Banning ethnic studies

American. It's supposed to be the land of the free right? Then why is Arizona continuously seeking to change things. I am a little disturbed that public schools in Tucson, AZ have decided to get rid of "ethnic studies", specifically Mexican-American. A NY times article stated, "It was Mr. Horne, as the states's superintendent of public instruction, who wrote a law aimed at...amid the fierce protests raging over the state's immigration crackdown."

I find it hard to believe this is happening. You do know Arizona and the REST of the western world was once part of Mexico right? Something else that was interesting was that the whole class was Latino; usually in Philadelphia, it's caucasian people taking the Latino classes. Just a thought. And if you want to dig deeper into the article, it goes on to talk about how no other ethnic studies class are being targeted. Weird.

I leave you with this quote: “Who are the true Americans here — those embracing our inalienable rights or those trying to diminish them?”

Dear 15 minutes of fame,

So how cool is this. The folks at mi trabajo are giving you the chance to "Write your own billboard" with a chance to actually see it (if you win). Part of the popular With Love, Philadelphia XOXO campaign, the letter-writing contest enables Philly fans and budding copy writers to submit With Love lines at visitphilly.com/contest for a chance to see their work and name on a billboard along Philadelphia’s I-95, the main East Coast highway, in February. (Notice why I did mine above lol).

Seriously, every time I go up I-95 from Maryland, there are literally NO signs to Philadelphia until you hit Chester, PA. That's why I decided to go with the billboard above. Although I can't win, I figured I'd enter anyway. Check out the other example below (en español). Enjoy!

Real World gets some real Latinas

So here's the deal. The Real World: Back to Las Vegas is the 25th season of MTV's reality television series which focuses on a group of "diverse" strangers living together for several months in a different city each season. Cameras document their lives and interpersonal relationships and pretty much make them become something they are not. This season the show is bound to get interesting because not only will they have two (2) Latinas, but one of them is a member of Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority Inc.

According to the Wikipedia page, "Nami is a Puerto Rican/Portugese American originally from New York who currently resides in Arizona. In 2010, she graduated from Buffalo State College where she majored in journalism, minored in political science and was a member of the Latin Sorority Lambda Theta Alpha." What should we expect from the new season?

I want to see the following:
  1. Saluting. Preferably the "B.E. ain't easy" line.
  2. Pledges waiting outside the door asking to come in
  3. Special guests which include other Greeks acting a fool
Producers. Is that too much to ask? One thing we can expect is for the show to focus on her attitude. Shame really.

Latinos use social media...duh

For the past few months all we've been reading about is, "Latinos do use social media" and "Latinos use mobile devices more and more." Clearly this is as obvious as the impending snow storm. However, what I haven't seen are success stories in businesses marketing to the Latino consumer. Sure you can have an ad here and there, but where are the results? I'm pretty sure the answer is out there but why do I have to dig deep.

Public relations is an easy tactic for marketers because all they need is an angle and *poof* you got your news story. However, where are the collaborations, advertisements and research. I ask myself this every time I see a story like the ones linked above. Now that I think about it, cell phone providers can probably give good insight but I haven't read anything about AT&T, Cricket or Boost Mobile lately. I'm glad to know people like @LanceRios, @LouisPagan, @AnaRC, @ERgeekgoddess, @Julito77 and the rest of the "Latinos using social media". I'm pretty sure these influencers are getting e-mails out the "wazzoo" asking, "Please help me."

In case you missed it: Three Kings Day

Three Kings Day was a few days ago and it was celebrated throughout the entire nation. In case you don't know what exactly some Latino cultures do during this time, see the video below. Enjoy!

I want my TropiTenders

If there's one thing I love to do it's EAT! This weekend I needed to go to Jersey for family matters and to my amazement I noticed (on Twitter) that Pollo Tropical was now in New Jersey. I was first introduced to Pollo Tropical on my amazing trip to Puerto Rico last year. Although it just didn't seem the same, I was glad to see the expansion to New Jersey. Unlike most fast-food restaurants, the food here is:
  1. Amazing
  2. Reasonably priced ($5 minimum for a combo meal)
  3. Latino food!
Three reasons you would get me there all the time. What do I usually get? The bowls which are so elegantly named: TropiChops. So the next time you're in Puerto Rico, Florida, New Jersey, New York or Connecticut, be sure to stop by and get some TropiTenders :). You won't be disappointed.

New weekly post: The awesome side of Greek life

Sad to say I must retire "That Really Grinds My Gears", "That Doesn't Grind My Gears" and "Tweets of the Week". Why? Figured I try something a little different for the new year. The Awesome Side of Greek Life won't be the only new weekly post I write but it's certainly the first one to launch today.

So what exactly is the awesome side of Greek life? There's lots to talk about and I'm not only talking about strolling. There are hundreds of individuals out there who are fighting the stereotype and becoming positive individuals in their own community. So today's shout out is to good friend @CinLorena originally from Maryland but now living in sunny Los Angeles #Jealous. Cindy is a founder of Chi Iota Pi Sorority Inc. and has pushed and pushed her organization further up despite all the challenges has faced. Cindy, you are truly "the awesome side of Greek life."

A pura vida gala in Philadelphia

As you know, it's Latino gala season in Philadelphia. These events are your opportunity to meet and greet with the most "influential" Latinos in the area. Sure the galas bring together almost the same people, but they are all different and unique in their own way. First up, the Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's gala: the Alegria Ball.

The 2011 Alegria Ball (Costa Rica Verde) will be held at the Please Touch Museum on Friday, January 21, 2011. For the 4th year, this GPHCC signature fundraising event recognizes the rich and vibrand cultures of Latin America. This year they celebrate Costa Rica's rich culture, lush tropical rainforests, biodiversity and flourishing green economy. The event will also host the 2nd annual Excelencia Hispanic Business Awards marking the incredible growth and success of Latino business and professional markets across the Greater Philadelphia region.

See you all there!

Modern Family is back!

One of our favorite TV shows is back and with a bang I must say (that's what she said). Modern Family is now in their third season and just when we thought it couldn't get any more interesting, it has and will continue to do so. I did notice the writers/producers are adding more guest apperances by not only notable celebrities, but also new comers.

Also, in the past most of the story lines joined all the families, the latest episode had most of the families separated but somewhat involved. And of course it doesn't amaze me that "Gloria" is continuing with her Colombian accents, "I'm afraid they might kidnap me." Really? lol. Is the show a little too obvious with the Colombian antics? I don't think so; I'm happy they have a Colombian woman on a mainstream TV show.

Vote for your favorite Latino song

Sure I read Latina Magazine, but it's for work purposes :). But the online stories are also interesting too. Anyways, Latina has decided to seek your vote for the best song of 2010! Hands down I'd go with Shakira's WAKA WAKA but they seem to have three other choices. Also including in the mix is Juanes, Juan Luis Guerra/Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. Yes good artists, but Shakira had a global hit, which stood for the 2010 World Cup and also had a dance with it; what more can you ask for? Vote now!

Zumba Zumba everywhere

Zumba. I'm sure by now you've heard of it but wondered, "What the hell is it?" Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music that creates a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system. Well now you can learn more and even participate here in Philadelphia.

Clever clever T-shirts

Remember when I told you about Tchirts.com, well here's to another round of hilarious shirts! Snorg Tees specialize in pop-culture inspired, random, and all around funny t-shirt designs. Most of the designs on the site are SnorTees employee creations. However, 28% of the design ideas come from the customers. We live in the age of social media and pop culture, it makes the world go round and round (sort of).

Think about a clever quote or something "savvy" from your time and put in on shirt. Examples include:
  • Warning: If Zombies chase us, I'm tripping you
  • That's what she said
  • The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself...and spiders
  • Little Brothers get Luigi
So as you can tell, a lot of the sarcasm comes from things we grew up with! Sign up to get exclusive deals, and don't worry, it's not just t-shirts; I mean it is the winter. Enjoy!

Mango's - a wait beyond belief

Sure when you're in a new city you have to go to the tourist traps. But when things start to get a little weird, that's when you should just leave a place. Example: Mango's Tropical Lounge in Miami, Fl. I had to wait a long time in a place which wasn't even packed. Also, not sure what type of management style they are running but when you have six people paying $10 each, why can't we use the bathroom right away?! "You'll use the bathroom when you purchase a drink." Really? When I purchase a drink? *pretends to purchase drink* Sure they had good music and good looking people, but it wasn't worth it. Sadly, if I ever go back to Miami you won't see me here again.

A new year - 2011!

Who would have thought New Year's Eve. could be a warm evening?! This past weekend I wasn't blogging because I was spending time with friends in sunny Miami, FL. It was the first time I spent a good amount of time in Miami for vacation. It was time well spent doing random things all over South Beach. This year let's forget all the negative things in our lives and just spend it with positive people. Don't hate, just spend this year with those that matter and you love. At the end of the day, live your life porque tomorrow is never promised. So start the year with shaking! haha
