Here are some key points according to the National Cancer Institute:
- Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths and is responsible for most cancers of the larynx, oral cavity and pharynx, esophagus, and bladder.
- Secondhand smoke is responsible for an estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmokers each year .
- Tobacco smoke contains thousands of chemical agents, including over 60 substances that are known to cause cancer .
- The risk of developing smoking-related cancers, as well as noncancerous diseases, increases with total lifetime exposure to cigarette smoke.
If you want to quit, try some gum.

I dislike smoking just as much as you do. Unfortunately, people will do whatever they want even if they know the ramifications of it. But what really annoys me are the smoers who insist on lighting up in train/subway/el stations. Obviously designated NO-SMOKING areas and they can't even wait the few minutes until they reach their stop. It's on thing to pollute your own body, but it's just plain rude to subject someone else to it.
